J.08 Update: China
"Unfortunately a powerful fog at the mouth of the river leading to Shanghai prevented us, along with hundreds of other ships and airplanes, from proceeding into Shanghai for two days. We finally debarked in Shanghai, committed to cramming as much of China as possible into five days. About a dozen people took an overnight train to Beijing for an action-packed twelve hours in which they saw The Great Wall, Forbidden City, and much more. Another group took a day trip to Hangzhou, a city referred to as "Heaven on Earth." Others explored urban Shanghai, visiting Yuyuan Gardens, People's Square, and the local markets.
Academic Field Programs (AFPs) began on 13 January and, due to our shortened stay in China, were reduced from three to two days in order to allow everyone more time for independent experiential learning in port. The AFPs took us to varied locations including the campus of Fudan University (one of The Scholar Ship's esteemed academic stewards), Shanghai Museum, the site of the first Communist Congress and Mao's former residence, and local businesses such as Coca-Cola and China Eastern Airlines. All in all, China was an awesome first port experience!"
