J.08 Update: India

"In an effort to add some context to what the community would likely witness in India, the Social Justice Student Group held a Hunger Banquet on 2 February. This simulation of world hunger and poverty was a powerful means of sparking discussion about our own roles and responsibilities regarding these issues.

The Scholar Ship arrived in Chennai (formerly Madras), India on 5 February. About half the students participated in Academic Field Programs (AFPs) in India, which took them on site visits ranging from lectures at the University of Madras, to local businesses in Bangalore, to a school in Kanchipuram for children rescued from sweatshops, to Firefly, a sustainable spiritual commune a few hours outside of Chennai.

Most everyone traveled independently in groups throughout the week-long stay. A group of about 25 participated in a shore excursion to Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra, which was breathtaking. Others traveled to places like Kerala on the west coast; Pondicherry, the former French colony a few hours south of Chennai; and Varanasi in Northern India. Father Mathew Chandrankunnel, who joined the voyage in Thailand as a Global Scholar, took a group of students to a school in Kerala to teach English.

We departed India on 11 February and settled in for five days at sea before we reach Port Victoria, Seychelles for our two-day mid-semester break. We can hardly believe that with three full ports behind us, the January 2008 voyage is nearly halfway over!
